Just like the seasons, our music taste and what we listen to changes depending on what we are experiencing. With spring in full bloom, students at Upper Arlington were asked to participate in a survey that reveals the current tunes our peers are listening to now. They were asked 3 simple questions about their favorite artists, genre of music and songs that have defined their transition into the final stretch of the school year.
With a total of 200 responses from UAHS students, the survey showed 28.2% are currently listening to pop music. Pop leading the charts shows that the mood among students is shifting from high-stress studying to the windows down, and sunroof open energy of spring in UA. Rock was a close second with 12.8% and Country came in third with 9%.
When it came to individuals behind the instruments, three names dominated the survey: Olivia Dean, Drake and Noah Kahan. From the jazzy and soulful tunes of Grammy-winner Olivia Dean, to the mellow and soft vibes of Noah Kahan, UAHS’s current rotation is a blend of upbeat hits and smooth melodies.
While the genres tell one story, the specific tracks tell another. Leading the charge for the “spring transition” are three songs that capture the current mood of the student body. Olivia Dean’s groovy song “Dive” seems to have resonated with students at UAHS after taking up 10% of the favorite songs now. Her uplifting beats are perfect for sunny drives with friends. Meanwhile, Noah Kahan has continued to dominate the folk genre with his song “Growing Sideways” being another top contestant in the poll. Finally, Harry Styles’ “American Girls” is a track that has quickly become a top song at UA.
As the final months of school begin to wind down, it is clear that the music echoing through the hallways is shifting with the temperature. All of these songs and artists contribute to the transition from the high-stress winter to the beginning of spring. No matter what is on your playlist, the “windows down” season has finally arrived in Upper Arlington.
