Sub Q&A

Two substitute teachers reflect on their lives both in and out of the high school.

MRS. HENNESSEY

District substitute Carol Hennessey talks about her life at Upper Arlington High School. As a district substitute, she is committed to coming to the high school daily and filling in all substitute positions that are available.

Q: How long have you been substitute teaching?

A: “It hasn’t been consecutive years…I subbed at [a] high school in Maryland, and that was back in ‘96. I did reading, math, and science… Then, I worked out in the business world for 15 years. I was a sales rep, I sold building materials. I worked with contractors, architects, builders, lumberyard owners. Then I moved to Upper Arlington in 2018.”

Q: What is your favorite class to substitute for?

A: “Art. I just love being in there. I get to watch the most talented kids, and art just fascinates me.”

Q: What is the most common question you get asked in the classroom?

A: “‘Can I go to the bathroom?’”

Q: If you were not a substitute, what would you want to be?

A: “I would paint full-time, definitely. Specifically, I paint using acrylic paints, and I put them on canvases, and I sell them to people. I love to paint the beach because I came from the East coast.”

MRS. MORAN

Building substitute Sharon Moran shares how her role of being a sub allows her to play to her teaching strengths. As a building substitute, Mrs. Moran is responsible for assigning and managing where substitutes go during the day.

Q: How long have you been substitute teaching?

A: “Only about six years. I had a three mile radius, so I could go home and let my dogs out. That was my criteria. I subbed at Metro, Grandview, and UA.”

Q: How long have you been a substitute for UA?

A: “It’s coming up on about five years.”

Q: Did you have any jobs before being a substitute?

A: “I got my teaching license in biology and started subbing in the middle of the year. Then I was placed as a temporary for secretarial services at Honda in the summer and worked there for eight years. Then I stayed home with my kids for a while and renewed my license to start subbing again.

Q: What is your favorite room to sub in?

A: “I like being an IS [Intervention Specialist] because you can be with a teacher and hear them teach and just kind of help manage the classroom. Oh, I really like orchestra, I have to admit, I love listening to the beautiful music.”

Q: Do you enjoy working with high school kids or younger kids more?

A: “I really like working with high school kids– you guys are great.”

Q: What is your favorite part about being a building substitute?

A: “I like the high school, the energy, it plays to my strengths as an efficiency expert. I love to see it all come together.”
