As sophomores, juniors, and seniors at UAHS did not have to come in to school on Aug. 16, they are required to participate in at
least six hours of community service— otherwise they will be marked absent for that day. With many additional incentives to provide for the communities such as the President Volunteer Reward, students at Upper Arlington High School may be wondering where volunteer opportunities might be. So, provided below is a small list of potential volunteer opportunities.
Upper Arlington Public Library
The Upper Arlington Public Library provides volunteer opportunities yearlong in both Tremont and Lane Road Libraries, and is accepting volunteer applications on a rolling basis. Students will be able to choose from either Book Buddies or Summer Reading Volunteer positions. Book Buddies is a monthly opportunity where students entering grades 6-12 will be able to help students in grades 1-3. The Summer Reading Volunteer position occurs over the summer, allowing students the opportunity to help younger students and give out rewards to those who have made the summer reading requirements.
YMCA of Central Ohio
The YMCA of Central Ohio has been able to serve fresh produce to at-risk communities, support their Van Buren shelter by providing meals and basic needs, and teach the next generation vital skills through coaching and mentorship programs all thanks to the help of volunteers. Other volunteer opportunities include translation services, food distribution, and after school enrichment. The YMCA of Central Ohio provides many volunteer opportunities throughout the year and would greatly appreciate the time and help given by volunteers.
Mid-Ohio Food Collective
Providing more than 140,000 meals a day, the Mid-Ohio Food Collective is in need of volunteers to help provide for families in need. With multiple volunteer opportunities throughout the week, alongside different tasks and activities for each event, the Mid-Ohio Food Collective is an excellent opportunity to get volunteer hours and provide for the community. Volunteer opportunities include: food sorting and packaging, working in the pantry or market, gardening, and meal preparation.
The American Red Cross
The American Red Cross is looking for volunteers who would be willing to provide relief and support to those in need. Although only teens 16 years or older will be able to volunteer, the Red Cross still provides students with the qualifications the opportunity to gain service hours. The main way teen students can get involved with the Red Cross is with the blood drives, where community members are given the opportunity to donate blood and save lives.
